Women with irritable bowel syndrome who were given mindfulness meditation training saw more improvement in their symptoms than those who participated in a support group, according to a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill created a program that included meditation, yoga and body scanning, during which people focused attention on one area of the body.
