Dopamine release linked to treatment response in cocaine addicts
U.S. researchers using PET discovered that participants with cocaine addiction who had more normal dopamine release were able to respond to therapy, while those cocaine-dependent subjects who had reduced dopamine transmission relapsed. The next step is to look for treatments that can boost dopamine transmission in those addicted to cocaine, according to the study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
